How much does it cost to take down a tree?

Home Owner Advice

Short answer:

anywhere from $500 to $10,000. But we know that’s not very helpful. The truth is, it’s impossible to say how much a tree removal will cost without seeing the tree in person. Here’s some things you can look at to have at least a general idea of how much it will cost.

How big is it?

Bigger trees cost more to remove for obvious reasons. Measure the diameter of the tree trunk a few feet off the ground (in inches.) Take a guess at its height (in feet.) Multiply those two numbers together, and that’s a good starting place. If your tree is 24 inches in diameter and 60 feet tall, we’ll use $1,440 as that starting place.

Where is it?

Front yard or back? Right next to the road or 100 feet behind the house? Usually, the farther it is from the road, the harder it will be to get everything cleaned up after the tree is down. If it’s right next to the driveway, the price from above may not change at all. If it’s all the way in the back, it may add up to 30% to that number. Let’s imagine the tree we mentioned earlier is directly behind your house and a relatively short walk from the driveway. We may add 10% to the number above—now we’re at $1,584.

What’s around it?

This is the hardest one to measure. Is the tree right next to your house, your garage, your fence, or other trees? Are there power lines or cable lines near it? All these things make the removal process more complicated, more dangerous, and more time consuming, adding to the price, even doubling it in extreme cases. Let’s say our hypothetical tree is 5 feet from the house, with a fence running around the whole back yard, but with no other obstacles. We may add 25%, leaving us at a total of $1,980.

Keep in mind that this blog is not (and can’t be) comprehensive. There are too many variables that just can’t be accounted for without standing next to the tree and looking at it. But hopefully this can give you a better guess than just, “anywhere from $500 to $10,000.” All of that said, the BEST guess you can get is by calling us for a free estimate!
